My own opinion on the subject is that an inverse relationship probably exists between the magnitude of error in cost evaluation and the length of time the error is perpetuated. If the focus of analysis is on short time spans of perhaps only a few generations, there is possibly considerable ''noise'' that must be factored out in attempting to test the models. However, if the focus is on substantially longer time spans, the potential for clearly observing patterns predicted by the models should be much higher.

It should also be noted that the models do not presently include any assumptions about how costs are calculated and compared. The leasteffort principle implies that maximum efficiency in energy utilization would always be sought. But, as some scholars have pointed out (Bronson 1972:200, Jochim 1976:24), cost should also include a security factor. That is, relatively less efficiency might be tolerated in selecting one resource or technology over another if relatively greater security or dependability is 44 MICHAEL A.
