Still, results of field experiments had shown that a good crop of dasheen might yield 15-20 tons/ha at the first harvest. In 1980, farmers at Biche reported an average dasheen yield at 6,600 kg/ha for the first harvest. Information on a second harvest was scarce and unreliable. This low figure must be viewed in a broader context. At that time, many farmers were preoccupied with another crop with a much higher profitability. In 2003, corm yields of dasheen ranged from 6,000 to 10,000 kg/ha. In 1980, eddo farmers reported an average yield at about 11,500 kg/ha in the wet season and 14,000 kg/ha under irrigation.

At the other locations, the grassland areas hardly allowed as much feed for animals as in the past. Crop Yields In 1967 and 1980, several hundreds of crop samples were taken from one square metre in farmers´ fields at all four locations. Individual samples were trashed and dried and yield figures were calculated in dry matter content (DM) in kg/ha. In 2004, farmers were asked about their approximate yields and whether they had increased or declined over the years. To allow for a comparison of yield trends over time for the same farmers, using actual field data for 1967 and 1980, they have been adjusted to moisture content of 16 per cent (Table 1).

In 1980, eddo farmers reported an average yield at about 11,500 kg/ha in the wet season and 14,000 kg/ha under irrigation. This was a substantial increase from about 5,000 to 6,000 kg/ha in 1965, when the highest yield reported was about 9,000 kg/ha. In 2003, the average yield of eddo was estimated at 10,000 to 12,000 kg/ha. In 1980, farmers at Toco stated the average yield of tannia at about 2,600 kg/ha for the first harvest, a figure slightly lower than in 1965. For consecutive harvests, there was a yield decline of about 200 kg/ha for each harvest.
