Meanwhile, Gracchus saw that things would turn out ugly for him if he was not elected tribune for the following year, and so he called upon the farmers in the fields to come to Rome to vote. But it was summer, and they were busy, so at the last minute he was compelled to make an appeal to the urban population. He made the rounds, begging them to elect him tribune since, after all, he was assuming great risks on their account.
