While many of the elements of the entrepreneurial context are clear, McHenry draws on work from other fields of research to demonstrate that learning can be explained and managed in many ways. Building on theories of adult learning and knowledge management, her chapter discusses the impact of different learning views on the management of experiential learning in an entrepreneurial context. The chapter draws upon some results from a longitudinal field study in a Norwegian medium-sized entrepreneurial venture, where the management actively aims to administer the experiential learning with the assistance of a competence management model in order to facilitate the growth of the organization.

From a learning perspective it was possible over time to identify a shift from a focus on primarily single-loop or adaptive learning to one that incorporated double-loop or generative learning also (Argyris and Schön 1978). A vital element of the process was the establishment of trust between all the players resulting in a long-term commitment to the network. This element in association with the process of dialogue resulted in the development of ‘an open-hearted and questioning milieu’ which increased the possibilities of exploiting the potential for double-loop learning over time.
