For our purposes this passage not only reaffirms the universalistic thrust of the rest of Maimonides's discussion, by emphasizing that the role of the Messiah is "to prepare the whole world to worship God with one accord," but indicates clearly that in the messianic world all human beings will accept the Torah and commandments (the Messiah cannot come until they are ready for this). But if everyone in the messianic world accepts God, the Torah, and commandments, wherein could the distinction between Jew and Gentile lie?

9 Such being the case, there can be no doubt that Maimonides does not accept as binding, indeed he contradicts, the rabbinic statement that proselytes will not be accepted in the messianic era. 40 It might be further objected that the Messiah will gather the people of Israel to the Land of Israel. Maimonides himself opens his discussion in "Laws of Kings" XI with this claim. That being the case, how can I argue that all the inhabitants of the world will become Jews? Are all the inhabitants of the world to be gathered in to the Land of Israel, depopulating the rest of the world and impossibly overcrowding the Land of Israel?

Maimonides, it appears, simply ignored that part of the rabbinic passage that he did not accept. This interpretation is confirmed by another passage in the Mishneh Torah. :~9 Such being the case, there can be no doubt that Maimonides does not accept as binding, indeed he contradicts, the rabbinic statement that proselytes will not be accepted in the messianic era. 40 It might be further objected that the Messiah will gather the people of Israel to the Land of Israel.
