Te Ahuriri Wetland
Client: Environment Canterbury
Location: Tai Tapu, Waitaha | Canterbury
Collaborators: Morphum Environmental (Environmental Consultant)
Year Completed: Ongoing
Te Ahuriri Lagoon is situated between Tai Tapu and Mutukaraka, adjacent to the Little River Rail Trail. Once an open body of water surrounded by rich wetland vegetation, the lagoon was drained over time to make way for farming, imposing on Ngāi Tahu’s significant relationship to this area. This restoration project sees to the creation of a large, constructed wetland to improve water quality, biodiversity and re-establish mahinga kai values and opportunities. The final design instates a controlled diversion for the Huritini/Hallswell River, putting to use a redundant river channel which discharges into the wetland, then ultimately to Lake Ellesmere beyond.
